Job Description
CME is looking for an individual who is knowledgeable and passionate about manufacturing and exporting, can function in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment, and understands how to work with government and politicians. CME has built strong programming and a solid membership base in British Columbia over the past five years and now we want to expand on what we’ve accomplished. The successful candidate will be focused on growing CME’s organization in British Columbia by directing and leading CME’s advocacy and government affairs efforts, expanding on recent accomplishments and continuing to deliver value to our members, building the association’s membership base, and increasing our visibility and influence in the province for our members. The person who will excel in this position will:
- Understand the issues facing manufacturers and exporters in British Columbia and focus on finding business and public policy solutions;
- Engage and work closely with CME BC manufacturers & exporters across the province;
- Retain current members and grow our new membership network;
- Establish constructive relationships with officials within provincial government that will advance CME’s public policy agenda to support the growth of manufacturing and exporting;
- Work with CME’s BC Board and Committees to set the strategic direction as well as public policy and advocacy priorities for CME in the province;
- Establish member interest working groups on key business priorities, identify common solutions, and work with provincial and/or local governments to affect necessary change.
- Strengthen CME’s relationship with like-minded industry groups so that collectively we can influence policy more effectively;
- Significantly raise the profile and recognition of the manufacturing and exporting sector as a key economic driver of the province’s economy;
- Work with CME’s BC Business Development Team build to identify and deliver member value programming;
- Function as a spokesperson for manufacturers and exporters in the media and public as necessary; and
- Promote CME’s national priorities within British Columbia.
OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES
The successful candidate have an amazing opportunity for personal growth and development, but like any position will face challenges; however you are up for it because of the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment and to make a difference in the province. Here are the big ones:
- You are dealing with a volunteer Board, all of whom have “day jobs”;
- CME is a business association; you will need to respond to and manage the demands of CME members;
- Not all members have the same interests or priorities at all times, however you must always strive for consensus and build support for positions and actions across a broad base of interests;
- The BC staff is small in numbers, so you will have to take the lead and be in involved in getting things done;
- There will be lots of issues competing for your time; time management, prioritization and multi-tasking are critical for success;
- Outside events sometimes overtake the agenda; you will need to be flexible; and
- As with most associations, there are never enough resources to cover all requests for your time; the ability to manage budgets and grow revenues are essential to long term success.
With your experience, you’ll have some great ideas about how to address these challenges so you can increase the value of CME membership and grow our association in British Columbia. We’ll want to hear about them.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
You will report to the BC Division Vice President and indirectly to CME’s VP of National Policy and to the Chair of CME’s BC Board. While the key mandate of this position is focused on BC, the person in this role will be a member of CME’s National Policy Team and will champion CME’s national priorities in BC. CME’s BC office is in Vancouver. Travel within BC will be required in addition to occasional travel within Canada.
