Ontario Looking to Cap CEO Salaries

Ontario is looking to put a cap on executive salaries with new legislation known as Bill 8. If it goes through, this will likely have a trickle-down effect across the country, and BC may soon find themselves in the same position.

This type of legislation would limit future salaries for Executive Directors. It would be wise for CEOs to ensure they are maximizing their compensation now.

Board members need to take some time to correctly evaluate Executive Director's performance and compensation. Management salaries must be competitive, or the non-profit sector will stand to lose their "cream of the crop" executives to the for-profit sector.

In early January, I encourage you to have a good look at compensation and evaluation. I would be pleased to support you in this process. Contact me at 1-888-531-5796 or

A major challenge to the association membership model today is about making evident the value to your members in being part of your organization.

In addition, every director should be viewed as a potential chief elected officer, just as he or she was likely identified as a potential director when serving as a committee chairman or member. Committee and board meetings are an excellent screening ground. Because of the importance of the selection process for directors, the association executive and nominating committee should use a checklist of qualifications such as the following.
