Our April Board Briefing newsletter leads with the unfortunate passing announcement of our friend and colleague, Tom Abbott.

The Passing of Tom Abbott CGA, CAE

Tom AbbottIt is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of Thomas (Tom) Abbott CGA, CAE after a long battle with prostate issues and Parkinson's Disease on March 22, 2016. Tom, the founder of Association Management Consultants, in Vancouver British Columbia was an outstanding author and worked with over 350 not-for-profit associations, charities and government organisations from Atlantic Canada to the Yukon and from Texas to Georgia; helping their Board of Directors to be more effective.

As many of you know, Tom and I worked together for many years. I particularly appreciated his Complementary Model of Board Governance and his outstanding dedication to our sector. He was a great mentor and most of all, a friend.

Countless Hours In Unproductive Meetings

Congratulations To Recent Chief Executive Officer Appointments

Congratulations to newly appointed Association President and Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Nicholson of the Canada West Ski Areas Association.

Also congratulations to Sarah Roth, newly appointed President and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation.

 

Closing Thoughts

The Association and other Not-For-Profit sector in British Columbia have begun a transition. It began with the introduction of a new Societies Act which will result in greater transparency, a restructuring of governance models, emerging trends such as smaller more ‘nimble’ Boards, greater accountability and more pressure applied on Board and staff for results-based performance.

Time BombChanging demographics will result in many Chief Staff Officers retiring, and allow for new career opportunities. The sector will not look the same in the next 2-3 years.
